Why Data Science?

Data science is one of the most interdisciplinary and in-demand fields of our time, sitting at the intersection of statistics, computer science, and domain expertise. As organizations across finance, technology, healthcare, and government work to make sense of the vast amounts of data they generate, the ability to extract insight from that data, and communicate it clearly, has become a core skill across nearly every field.

The Data Science concentration was developed jointly by the Departments of Statistics and Computer Science, both of which are ranked in the top 10 globally by QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. It trains students to work across the full data science pipeline: statistical modelling and machine learning, programming and data visualization, big data infrastructure and the communication skills to translate findings into decisions. The concentration is designed for students who are already strong in quantitative reasoning, like those coming from Statistics, Data Science or related programs and want to deepen their computing and applied research skills in a graduate setting.

Career outcomes span a wide range: Artificial Intelligence Research Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, Applied Scientist (machine learning), Data Scientist or Analytics Engineer, Quantitative Researcher/Analyst.

We’re hosting an MScAC Data Science Information Session on Tuesday, July 7, 3:00–4:00 p.m., where you can hear from faculty, current students and alumni about what the program looks like: the coursework, the internship, the application process and how to build a strong application portfolio starting from your early years.

Date: Tuesday, July 7, 2026
Time: 3:00–4:00 p.m. EDT
